Hanlon’s Razor is a variation of the Peter Principle. It is as ubiquitous as Occam’s Razor in application, but has the same inherent pitfall.
If one wants to conceal a false flag, hide it behind Occam’s Razor. If one wants to conceal malfeasance and criminal behavior, hide it behind Hanlon’s Razor.
Claims of incompetence are the single most used claim or excuse by those caught committing criminal behavior.
Don't let either stop lines of inquiry or prevent exercises in critical thinking. The value of intelligence data is directly proportional to it's improbability. Most of the time both Razors apply, but not 100% of the time.
